What is 5-HTP?
5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is an amino acid that is the intermediate step between tryptophan and the important brain chemical serotonin. The human body manufactures 5-HTP from L-tryptophan, a natural amino acid found in most dietary proteins.
The nutritional supplement 5-HTP (common name for the compound 5-hydroxytryptophan) is a derivative of the amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan is converted to 5-HTP in the human body; once it is converted to 5-HTP it can then be converted to serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter in the brain.*
