Supplements for Allergies

We received a call this morning from a gentleman that is riddled with an allergy that is year round and unidentifiable. He has gotten his skin pricked a thousand times but to no avail in pinpointing what he is allergic to. For 30 years he endured this allergy and thought it was time to try natural herbs and vitamins to combat this foreign allergen.

Allergies are caused by the immune system’s overreaction to a harmless substance, such as animal dander, pollen, feathers, or dust to name a few. Often it’s because you are a stranger in a strange land. For example: My bloodline is primarily German and Scottish but I live in Texas. Every September I sneeze from ragweed and every December I sneeze from cedar. People more indigenous to this land rarely suffer from ragweed or cedar. We do carry various supplements that may assist the overreaction inflammation response.

1. Quercetin - This is a flavonoid that gives vegetables and fruit their vibrant colors. It helps block the release of histamine that causes inflammation.

2. Bromelain - Some studies have found that bromelain is helpful in reducing nasal swelling, making it easier for people to breathe.

3. Vitamin C – Yes, Vitamin C (calcium ascorbate) has intrigued allergy researchers for years. Vitamin C supplements contain bioflavonoids that may assist in respiration.

4. Magnesium - A magnesium deficiency may more likely cause a release of histamines.

5. Beta Glucan – It’s famous for its support for healthy immune function. Our Maximum Beta Glucan is top seller.

6. Essential fatty acids – such as Fish Oil and Flax Seed oil are not only important for your general health but also reduce the inflammatory response to allergies

So which do you take? Good question. Everybody is a little different and may benefit more from one supplement than the other. I’ve been on a steady regimen of Fish Oil, our Healthy Vita/Min (which has vitamin C and Magnesium among other goodies) and Maximum Beta Glucan. Ragweed is in all its glory right now and I barely have a sniffle.
